Balance: Active Neutral

Balance isn’t just a martial arts buzzword. It’s not some yoga pose or a one legged stance.

Real balance gives you adaptability, power, speed, emotional regulation, and a whole lot of confidence, both on the mats and in life. For me, it’s one of the most important physical qualities you can train, not just for kickboxing, self-defence, or combatives, but for how you carry yourself through stress, conflict, and everyday life.

So what is “Active Neutral”?

In our training, whether it’s martial arts, kickboxing fitness, combatives, or self-defence, we use the term Active Neutral to describe the posture that gives you the best mix of stability and mobility.

  • Not bracing

  • Not slouching

  • Not waiting to move, but ready to move.

That’s Active Neutral.

In the photo I use when teaching this concept, we compare three postures:

1. Leaning Back (heels-heavy) - looks relaxed, but you’re always one step behind.

2. Straight Up (evenly weighted) - looks good on paper, but can leave you stuck in place.

3. Slight forward lean (weight through the balls of the feet, heels lightly grounded) - this one’s gold. It’s what we call go mode.

We also call it:

Nose over toes

Chest, belly, hips

The Go Position

Whatever you call it, the principles are the same. You’re grounded but light, relaxed but ready. The joints stack properly, the muscles do minimal work, and there’s a clear line of communication between brain and body. You don’t need to prepare to move. You’re already in the best place to move from.

That, my friend, is Active Neutral. And once you feel it, you’ll wonder why no one taught it to you earlier.

Beyond Posture – Why Balance Is a Daily Practice.

Martial artists love talking about stances - front foot here, back foot there, drop your weight, and all the rest. But for me, real progress starts with understanding balance: how it feels, how to find it, how to lose it, and how to get it back quickly.

When someone targets you, whether it’s a physical attack or a mental/emotional hit, balance is the first thing that gets shaken. If you’ve trained how to recover it quickly, you’ve already taken the power back.

That’s why I hammer this idea home in every Raw Life Australia session, from teens learning kickboxing for confidence, to middle-aged men and women reclaiming strength, to anyone building resilience from the inside out.

Balance Isn’t a Drill. It’s a Daily Habit.

You don’t need a mat or gloves to train this. Your day is full of chances to work on balance if you’re paying attention.

  • Standing in a queue? Shift your weight.

  • Brushing your teeth? Play with posture.

  • Getting annoyed at traffic? Come back to centre.

  • Feeling off? Ask: where’s my weight - in body and mind?

Your daily life is full of balance drills, if you’re paying attention.

And the bonus? Training your physical balance teaches you mental/emotional balance too.

You learn to respond instead of react. You stop bracing for life and start flowing with it. You move better, think clearer, and feel more in control, even in chaos.

In Summary

Whether you’re walking into a self-defence class, trying to stay grounded under pressure, or just wanting to feel better in your body, train balance. Train it often. Make it second nature. Active Neutral isn’t just a posture. It’s a mindset - one that gives you freedom, flow, and fire all at once.

Try less, do more.

Balance is a brilliant place to start.
